Ferrari 360 Spider The 360 Spider stands as Ferrari’s 20th road-going convertible, breaking records in two distinct domains. Notably, it epitomized the pinnacle of spider engineering at Maranello before 2000, boasting unrivaled technical sophistication, exquisite styling, and exceptional performance. Sharing identical running gear with its Berlinetta counterpart, the 360 Spider housed a mid-rear 3586 cc V8 engine generating 400 hp at 8,500 rpm, coupled with a longitudinal gearbox integrated with the differential. This configuration ensured near-identical performance to the Modena on both tracks and roads, with speeds surpassing 290 km/h regardless of the top's position. Despite being only marginally heavier than the Berlinetta by 60 kg, it retained equivalent boot and cabin space. Despite the mid-positioned 400-hp V8 engine with five valves per cylinder, Ferrari engineers ingeniously crafted a hood that seamlessly folded away within the engine bay, preserving the car's sleek silhouette. Complemented by rear fairings reminiscent of classic Ferrari sports cars and roll-bars ensuring passenger safety, the design exuded timeless elegance and functionality. Chassis enhancements prioritized achieving maximum static and dynamic rigidity, reinforced sills, stiffened floor pan, redesigned windshield structure, and reinforced rear bulkhead minimizing engine noise. The 360 Spider set a new benchmark for drop-top cars with its structural integrity and dynamic responsiveness, featuring a robust protective crash cage supplemented by tubular steel roll bars integral to the drop-top mechanism. Maintaining the aerodynamic efficiency of the berlinetta, engineers incorporated twin radiators and an undertray to optimize airflow beneath the car, channeled through extractors under the tail. Extensive wind tunnel testing ensured efficient aerodynamics, achieving over 170 kg of downforce at maximum speed, a mere 10 kg less than the berlinetta, facilitated by a Formula 1-derived nolder on the tail's leading edge.
